please help me beat this thing, I get the demon mail, but then it wails on me.
Do you know the general strategy? (How to get it to open up, only to attack with Magic when it does, and so on)

To get Tantarian to 'open up' you must deal 150-200 damage to him. Ensure that you have equiped Antibody before the fight, and have Devil Killer aswell if possible, although you wont be physically attacking him much.
Make Zidane steal from Tantarian constantly, have Vivi Focus all the time aswell. Make Amarant attack him with Spare Change or Steiner with Minus Strike.
Once Tantarian has opened up, use only Magic attacks on him, don't attack him physically, so use Vivi and Garnet/Eiko.

You dont have either of them against Tantarian. On Disc 2 the party is Freya, Steiner, Vivi and Zidane, on Disc 3 it's Freya, Amarant, Vivi and Zidane.
"...just use your most powerful attacks, such as throwing objects with Amarant. He'll probably be your most useful character during this fight."
If Amarant uses throw Tantarian will close instantly.

Tantarian is in the library on the left in A.Castle/Hallway. You'll see a book sitting on top of a shelf. Talk to it:
"I hear someone talking"
-> Try to listen.
"Challenge me, if you dare."
-> Challenge.
It's damn hard to open him. His Defense is crazy, physical attacks will do next to nothing, and when he's closed he'll use Doom (a counter of 10 starts over a characters head, when it reaches 0 the character dies), Edge (physical attack, massive damage to one party member), or Paper Storm (physical attack, massive damage to all party members).
When he's open he can't hurt the party at all if everyone has Antibody equipped, since he'll only use Poison. He'll use it five times before cosing voluntarily. Any physical attacks will cause him to close instantly.
When he's open he has 0 Magic defense and a weakness to Fire, so using Fira is a good idea. I can't say for sure but a friend of mine said Steiner's Sword Magic works well too and won't cause him to close. If you're on Disc 3 Thievery is really your only other option unless you bought a Dark Matter from the Treno Auction House. It does 9999 damage when used on an enemy.
