I can't stand it when my clients are called Mike. It causes a short circuit in my brain and I can't understand them.
I also dislike Ambers.
James to Jim makes some sense.
James -> Jimmy -> Jim.

I started answering to Richard for a while because people call me Dik. So I convinced people my name was actually Richard. I didn't like Richard any more than I liked Dik. I prefer people just call me Dakoda or sir or your highness or something.
James -> Jamie -> Jimmy -> Jim.
Could possibly make more sense, especially if you try saying it with an accent :p

I've never understood how Jack became short for John. There's at least a few things wrong with that.
I guess it's the same thing with William being shorted to Bill, instead of Will.
William -> Will -> Bill
Richard -> Rick -> Dick
