Geno is cool in my books, but I think I'll answer with the silent protagonist of Chrono Trigger, Crono.
I know it's kind of recent (um, technically), but Denam Pavel from Tactics Ogre. Ironic, because the player decides the path he takes throughout the conflict, but my time with him made me grow very fond of him.
