One more tip I discovered in the official guide last night: If you hit 'X' (I use a PS3, so I don't know if it's still X on the 360) while the '1' fades away during the countdown at the start of the race, you will get a boost. I've not done it yet, but it's something I'll definitely be trying next time I hit the races!
