from a biological standpoint, fruit. seeds on the inside, not a seed itself (like a vegetable).

In Australia it's a drink. "Lemon squash" or just "squash" is the common term for what peeps in North America would call lemonade.... and what Aussie's call "lemonade" is Sprite to North Americaners.

The only time I saw squash was in a multilingual adaptation of Midsummer Night's Dream as the donkey's man bits. So that's what it is to me.
Squash is technically a fruit, but for cooking it is treated like a vegetable. Like Rob said.
