And besides, once I answer one of these alleged public polls I can't see who voted for what anyway.

I agree, but sometimes in not necessary.
I find that fewer people will actually take the poll if their names are shown.

Polls shouldn't be public because I judge everyone on their choices SO HARD.
In all seriousness if people are vindictive enough to judge other people over a user created poll, then chances are there are no pleasing them, anyway. That and they'll just find something else to pick at, because some people just can't be content or happy unless they are finding flaws in other things to feel better about themselves.
I only care who shared my opinion but tbh I don't think I've seen a serious poll outside of EoEo ever
I think private polls are okay. People can voice their opinions in the thread if they want to stand behind them.
