He is an abomination created from the riff-raff dreg souls of Gaia which makes him pure magic with some level of consciousness.

Is it ever established if he's a prototype for the other Black Mages in the game?

The Black Mages are all made of mist. He was the prototype, or a creation gone wrong. Did you ever play Ratchet and Clank? Same principle, I imagine.

He is basically the same as Orko from He Man

Orko and Vivi are from the world of Trolla which is in another dimension. They are both Trollans. Orko unfortunately, was born without any legs.

Vivi is simply and artifically created intelligence, like Tidus, that was created with the gag of the "unknown" face as the face in old Final Fantasys are covered when wearing the hat. In Vivi's case, a mist creation, it is more like the Black Mages being an actual species. Their eyes, the yellow light, even fade away when they die. Well, somehow that is fitting because you talk about the light in your eyes that vanishes.

I think Vivi is a prototype for the next level of Black Mage. It goes Black Mage, Black Waltz, Vivi. Maybe he didn't die stop in the end.

Um, pretty sure he's a transdimensional dustmite. They even said so in the secret ATE in Treno.
