Generic Soldiers
How many of theses guys/gals do you keep on your squad? By the endgame, after all the storyline & secret characters have been brought about, do you even keep any around?
If you do let them hang on, do you set them on a certain path or have them learn everything (Major Grinding)?

On my 'good' save file I don't have any of them left. However nowadays when I play in order to mix thing up I typically impose some set of restrictions on myself, and usually one of them is no special characters.

I have an unnatural attachment to my generic's. To the point that I rarely use the named characters. Mind you, I think part of the reason is because my generic's tend to have abilities I feel I need by the point named characters come along, and I hate the thought of leveling the name characters in those other jobs to get them.
Mind you, I've still done it on occasion. Then of course there's Orlandu who's just balls to the wall good without any leveling other jobs when you get him.
Plus I can send the generic's on missions to level up the troutty jobs like calculator to get the good skills. Like calculator skills.

I hate how long it takes to start getting named characters, and I hate using them when I've put all this time and effort into my normals.
And that sucks, cause i really like some of the named characters.

I keep them all that are given to you, so the troops Ramza starts with and the three who join after the flashback is over. Other than that, I never really recruit characters cause I try to make room for the named characters but luckily I only like four of them which gives me plenty of flexibility to mix and match my teams. It helps that I rarely level up the named characters beyond their initial jobs cause why bother when their starting classes are so useful? :wcanoe:

I have 10 generics by end game. Always. At the start, I throw out every generic they give me and buy 7 more of my choosing. 3 males, 4 females. Then after Agrias joins, I throw out the 3 they give and I get 3 more generics, 2 female, 1 male.
The first time I played the game, my 2 first generics were named Chamberlain and Montana and Chamberlain was a monk/geomancer and Montana was a ninja and something else and darn if I didn't love those two more than the story characters. So now I'm writing a book and the main character is named Chamberlain Montana :D
Oh also, I give each of the initial 7 and Ramza 2 jobs. The 3 I get later are my dancer, bard, and mime.
I also barely ever use any story characters except Ramza.

Shion, you're missing out on the most broken character in video game history, T. to the mother smurfin' G. Cid. All the sword skills. Equipped w/ the Excalibur, auto-Haste.
The last time I played, I got rid of all the generics while I kept all the story characters. This time, I'll probably keep enough generics to do the bar jobs.
Story characters are hard to build, too, since they don't have Accumulate to get some Exp. & JP when you have to burn a turn. :stare:

I generally use mostly generics, because I love the variety and customization -- and by the time I get named characters, I'm too lazy to level them in those other jobs. I'll still keep the named characters on my team, but except for some mixing-and-matching, my battle teams are mostly Ramza + generics.
