Not necessarily. They could have made a ton of models already, and they'll probably be usable in ue4. The biggest loss is probably the time they might have spent on an inhouse engine before deciding to scrap it.
Personally, I think it's all cool. Less time spent on reinventing the wheel, more time spent on designing a good game.
When you switch an engine you basically have to start over from scratch right? It sounds this isn't going to be coming anytime soon either, though I expected it. It sounds like some trouble is brewing. I'd think they'd be handle the engine they designed.
No. You do not have to start over from scratch. 3d models and textures aren't made within the engine, but converted from other programs into a format that whatever engine you use supports. Audio assets are naturally also completely unaffected by this change, and so is the story, world design and characters as well.
Luminous seems to only be used on XV. Which is sad because it seems like a great system but I bet Unreal Engine 4 is easier to use.
Epic has always been good at making efficient and good looking engines.
When that's 99% of your business model and almost every game company uses your engine, you'd damn well better be good at it. Which they really, really are.
Anyway, back in the PS2 era or earlier changing engines probably would have taken a lot more effort than it does now since a lot of development tools were made in house as needed, but it's really not the case now.
Seems fine by me. What's the over/under on a release year for this one? 2017? Maybe my kids will be able to play it.
I thought the graphics in ME2 and 3 were pretty good, at least. There is certainly a distinctive look and feel to the engine, but I don't think any of the games that use it look bad just because they chose UE3. It also has the advantage of being extremely scalable. I've ran UE3 games on mid-end hardware from 2005.
I just hope it good
