As an aside, I do really enjoy using scales, to rank films and video games and the like.

Depends on if the rating comes with reasoning and constructive critisism.
If we are talking about rating peoples looks, I assume people who do that are either still in High School or really wish they still were.
This reminds me of this stupid surveys. I loathe rating systems like these and I especially detest when people rate people's looks in this way or in general really.
I had to fill out a form at NYU Medical Center that was based on this rating system. Something like, "on a scale from 1 to 10 how much pain are you in" type of thing. It was very dumb.
