How is it a lake if it's literally just a sheet of ice with a little piss puddle hundreds of feet below it?
That magically stops people from dying/breaking limbs!!
I believe the implication is that they landed on Sin. And with all the gravity bulltrout Sin/YY is shown to be capable of in the game stopping a couple of people from falling on the debris on his body is easy to accept.
Besides there's like no falling damage in this game. Party survives being pushed off the cliff by Chocobo Eater and if I remember correctly Tidus LITERALLY lands on his feet. Been a while since I saw that scene though so I might be imagining things.
Sin comes afterwards, I think......

Well, in my case I was using cheat codes so I just assumed the infinite health kept them safe.
