It's likely Romancing Saga, because what I remember of SD3 on ROM is that the plot is practically incoherent. From what I've heard from someone who has played Trials, it's pretty much that way by design unless you choose the right pair of characters, and even then there will be dangling plot threads related to the third character. That said, I've never played Romancing Saga and have no real idea whether it's any more coherent. So for that reason, I'm out of this one.
Trials plot is fairly coherent, the partner aspect only enhances the plot of your lead character since you'll get more scenes with all the characters involved with it. Trials plot is actually three separate stories that are all happening at once. Even if you don't have any character from one of the plotlines, you'll still meet them and get references to it, it just comes across as a background even to your playable cast. The story is fairly coherent, even with the fan mod if you ask me.
As for Romancing SaGa 2, it's story is more of a framing device that ties together a bunch of smaller stories. It's unique premise is that the plot is a generational story with multiple rulers of Avalon pitching in. The main that ties it together is the revival of the Seven Heroes and their various schemes to send the world to ruin.
I picked Romancing SaGa 2, though this was a weird choice for me. Of course, I haven’t played Trials of Mana, but I do love Ronancing SaGa 2, even if it is a very non-linear story with a pretty basic main plot. But it’s still a plot that had me very involved so idk, maybe it makes sense
Another game I haven't played, so another one I'll pass on voting ;)
Granted it's probably Romancing SaGa 2. Trials of Mana is great but the story is its weakest part.
You know, I am absolutely shocked Trials lost this round. I was really expecting people to vote it in because like only three people on this forum have even played RS2 and I'm fairly certain I'm the only one of those three who has actually beaten it. Whereas I know a few of you played Trials to completion.
I love Trials, and I even love its storytelling, but it would lose out to a few of its contemporaries if they were matched up so I'm not comfortable voting it against a game I haven't played.
Ok but like has anyone noticed I was the only one to vote. And I haven’t played Trials.
Shame on you, both for voting against a game you haven't played and for not letting us see what happens when nobody votes. :p
But I really wanted to vote for Romancing SaGa 2!
I know I know, the *idea* was to leave the decision to those who actually have played both, but, well, just how things work out sometimes I suppose.
