Control Issues with SD3

Ok, so I'm playing Seiken Densetsu 3 currently and I'm enjoying it lots. I have an issue however. My party is up to 3 people now and when I hit Select to change leaders its often times putting me in control of two people which is highly annoying and unmanagable. By hitting select again I'm switching back to single control of a character that I don't want to control. I have no clue what is going on here. I simply want to be able to switch from single control to another character. I find that by going through the menu changes the control of my characters. When I bring up the ring menu also, I'm having issues changing who's ring I want to bring up.

This is all so highly annoying. Can someone provide me with some assistance on how I can properly manage the control of my characters. I don't want to have this ruin the experience of what is becoming a very fun game to play.
