Is there a way to cap the downstream/upstream that the computer can handle using windows XP? I am currently using a shareware program to do this, and wondering whether or not I should not need to be using such a thing if XP has some sort of built-in bandwidth throttler.
Not that I'm aware of, and I've studied XP Professional to the certification (Exam 072-270) level.
That's not saying that it's not there--the Windows 2000 Pro cert, unlike the XP Pro cert, doesn't cover certain command-line utilities (robocopy and scopy)--but the likelihood is fairly small.
You can do it by editing the registry--You might find some hacks on dslreports.
I'm not aware of any either. Application level bandwidth capping is nicer anyway, since you can prioritise your downloads more easily. Or go install a Linux box between your Windows machine and the internet connection that has bandwidth shaping support enabled, which could also double up as a firewall :p
What software are you using at the moment anyway?
