Aeris vs. Aerith
Okay, what the hell is it?!? Is it Aeris or Aerith?! Aerith just sounds stupid and Aeris sounds more pretty. Where did Aerith come from anyway, when in the game, she's Aeris? And don't bring up Kingdom Hearts because pronounced Tidus's name "Tee-dus" which doesn't make phoenetical sense.
I, myself, am sticking with Aeris. How 'bout you?
-
Aerith is the original Japanese name, and Aeris is the translated version. As for Tidus, don't you think Square would have the name of it's own character pronounced correctly in the voice acting? These are names made in Japan, they don't use the same pronunciation we do.
-
I agree. Why wouldn't they know how to pronounce their own character's name? lol
-
I always try to change her name to Aerith, but everytime I start a new game I forget and quickly choose the default name.:mad2:
-
Too use to Aeris, and I like it better, yeah.
-
Yeah but she prolly sucks in the fights, I don't even play with her cause I already know she's gonna die, all lost levels for nothing.
-
Aerith: Original name.
Aeris: Anagram of 'Arise'. Thus, the many 'Revive Aeris' rumors.
-
Aeris' name was derived from the word heiress, namely because she was the last ancient, and she inheritated the holy materia.
-
Tee-dus?! :laugh:
... yeah. I think I'll stick with Ty-dus. :|

In Japanese (and yes, I'm considering that in another thread I'm saying how little I know about japanese) the sound that gets transliterated as the letter "i" is pronounced the same way every time. Vowels don't change in Japanese. that particular sound is pronounced "ee". I guess they just felt like changing the name Aeris back to Aerith for KH. They made a lot of changes in that game though (Squall is now calling himself Leon and wearing Laguna's clothes and hair, Aeris/th is alive, Cloud has Vincent's claw, Sephiroth is now a member of N'Sync, etc.).
-
Hmph
I would rather stick with Aeris because it is prettier and it sounds better too!
-
More on KH: 'Yuffie' is pronounced 'Yoofie' which actually sounds better, and Sephiroth really is the One-Winged Angel.

quick lesson in the phonetics for Japanese language
The vowels are pronouced rather differently there
A = Ah (make the ah sound short and helps if it comes form a paralysed throat try not to move your tongue when saying it)
E = Eh
O = in the english we pronouce it oh in japan litterally just o
U = ue
I = e I is pronouced as e in english
Looking at my above quick lesson you'll see that Tidus spelt TIDUS is pronouced TEDUS unless the vowel is elongated (tidus is btw) in which case it becomes TEEDUS
Also depending on whether you go to north or south japan R may be pronouced more like L (don't ask just sa RU because it's the easiest with the tip of your tongue on the roof of your mouth to understand)
-
HUN!
It is just like the name Sanosuke, you pronouce it Sansuke!
-
More to the point, how's Aeris supposed to be pronounced?
I pronounced it "Iris" for a while, but Iris is mainly an old lady's name (at least in England) so I switched to "A-riss" :p
Yeah, Kingdom Hearts wasn't the only place where Tidus was pronounced as "Tee-Dus" (as in tedious!) - in FFX International you got a bonus disc containing video interviews with the voice actor and actress for Tidus and Yuna. The guy who played Tidus does indeed pronounce it as "Tee-Dus"
Yoo-fie is fine, though it does destroy the mental image I used to have of the 'yufffie' sound the air makes when she does that swishing-fist-pose-type-thing.
