Syphon Filter 3 question (minor spoilers)

Near the start of Lian Xing's mission in Rhoemer's Aztec Ruins base, there is an injured terrorist soldier who's fallen into a deep pit and broken his leg. He makes two different calls for help, in Spanish, when Lian jumps over the pit - it seems that he's mistaken her for his comrade Manuel. I'm wondering if there's any kind of significance to this guy, anything you can do besides (a) leave him there to die or (b) drop a grenade/tear gas bomb into his hole and leave him to die... it seems kind of strange and pointless that he's there in the first place. Also rather heartless just to leave him to perish, since he's in no position to harm anyone, and never fires a shot at Gabe or Lian during the game. Perhaps he was connected to some scene that got deleted at the last minute due to changing sensitivities in late 2001? Syphon Filter 3 got held back for a while after the September 11 atrocity, maybe this inujred soldier was connected to the last-minute editing...
