This game indeed carried the subtitle Final Fantasy Gaiden in Japan, but only for the same reason that it was renamed Final Fantasy Adventure in America: Square was, at the time, uncertain that their games would sell if they were not connected somehow to their most popular series. Either that, or they wanted to justify the presence of môguri and the chocobo in the game. In any case, it was completely superficial: "Final Fantasy Gaiden" doesn't even appear on the title screen.
Also, as referenced here, the game was originally intended as a more ambitious project set to appear on the Famicom Disk System in 1987, before the first Final Fantasy had even been created.
