What's your reaction to this? I'm not entirely sure at the moment, but the reasoning for doing so seems to make sense: to avoid any sort of calculated attack which was probably being planned for June 30th.

"America is occupying Iraq" was just one excuse among many others, in my opinion. I don't think this will stop any attacks. There are enough other excuses that the bad guys aren't going to be running out of them any time soon.
It really won't. There still will be assassinations of their leaders. Remember, during the first year of the Vietnam conflict, the numbers of the Vietcong were imagined to have been only 15,000. They're not a real country until they can make their own decisions without the United States watching over their shoulders.Quote:

Very prudent move, making the transfer at a different time from the one scheduled. I'd bet the insurgents were fuming at missing the opportunity to make a "statement"...
Hopefully, the new government will gain the support and confidence of the people, and also hopefully the coalition forces can protect them until their hold on power is secure and their country is back on its feet.

It's not really sovereignty per se. The new Iraqi government wasn't chosen by the Iraqi people, nor does it have much power. I fear that what you'll end up with is a situation similar to Afghanistan, and the return of warlords feuding over the entire country. Don't be suprised if nowhere outside of Baghdad is safe.

Even though we are pulling out of there, some of are troops will still be there, helping with security efforts. Like in Japan are troops are still there, in Yokuska, Okinawa, etc. I just damn, hope everything goes well, and there going to hand Saddam over to the Iraqis. I hope they execute him.
This isn't going to help Iraq one bit. There's already been threats against the new Prime Minister, and there's been attacks on the new Iraqi Police Force. The sovereignty being given two days early was a good ploy to throw off potential attacks though.
A British serviceman was killed just one hour after sovereignty was handed over, and I think many more lives of the coalition forces will be taken, as well as civilian contracters, and not to mention Iraqi civillians. The coalition intends to pull their troops out in two years time, but I personally think that is not going to happen at all. The Iraqi Police/Security force has small numbers, and is ill-equipped and ill-trained to deal with the rebels and fanatics.
Afghanistan have also requested for the number of forces there to be increased as well, and the United States army is getting over-stretched, as I read today, with one third of troops in Iraq being reservists. Iraq is going to be a real mess for years to come.
There's definitely something to be said about "Global Over-reach" and America is certainly going to have to make some tough decisions in the coming months. Troops were recently pulled out of the Balkans, but as Professor Psych noted, troops are still spread quite a lot over a wide variety of places.
It will certainly be interesting to see how Bush and Kerry address this topic, as well as leaders of other nations who may be having the same problem.
