Yes they left that part out. I'm guessing they wanted to start anew somewhat. I think it's somewhat better. But the game itself is still pretty bad.

You don't have limit breaks or overdrives, but bosses have some moves that are clearly overdrives. (SPOILER)Aeons use their overdrives from FFX when fighting you, and most of Shuyin's moves are Tidus' overdrives. Fiends in oversoul mode also reminds me of FF9's Trance. I'm not sure if using special dress spheres is more like the equivalent of limit breaks or summoning.
No limit breaks sucks so much =(
The samurai dressphere uses Auron moves *_* it's uber :P
yeah, they killed em for the Special Dresspheres. if you think about it, you have to build up to those as well, charging around the sphere grid and whatnot, so it makes sense. plus, they be character specific and uberpowerful.
Yeah, the special dress spheres are kind of the limit breaks of this game, especially Yuna's. But they are kind of like the Trances from FFIX, they don't really do that much more for you.
i recon theve got special dresspheres but limt brks and overdrives wud b alot better
