Heve you used a cheat-code disk? If you have, then chances are that's the problem. You'll have to restart the game. Otherwise, if it is just crashing every time, take a look at the state of your game cd and memory card. It could just be that the disk needs cleaning.
It happened to me, so I rented a different copy of FF9 from the local Blockbuster, and got past that part
