Coincidence?
Do you see any similarity between Terra being caught by the Empire, escaping from them and being subsequently chased by them, and Aeris being caught by Shinra, escaping from them and being subsequently chased by them? Apparently I do.
Anyway, the purpose of this thread is to discuss any plot lines in different FFs you think are too similar.
-
While slightly similar, I don't see much of a corralation between the two. Might just be me though.
-
well seeing how there's a common theme in most FF's about some giant evil empire/corporation/organization that is trying to utilize the "magical force" in that world, and that your characters are former associates of the bad guys -- I'm not surprised at all.
other similarities (off the top of my head):
FF1 and FF8 - weird unexplained time travel
FF1 and FF9 - black mages with pointy straw hats
FF7 and FF8 - supermilitary operations with weird acronyms that start with "S", and the main character has a giant...er....sword
FF4 and FF8 - your enemy is actually your friend being mind controlled by your real enemy
-
-
All the FF's have rather stereotipical stories, so it's normal they appear to be similiar. Thinks like summons, chocobos, Cid etc. support this feeling.
-
Square's running out of ideas.

The biggest, and most obvious, coincidence of all would probably have to be that every Final Fantasy from II on has a Cid in it.
The Cids in 4 and 7 are playable, while the ones in 5, 6, 8, and 10 are just part of the script. (I ain't played 9, yet.)
-
FF9 is much akin to 5,6,8 and 19. Just script.
-
2 & 5: Leila and Faris. Both female pirate captains that first try to capture your team, then join it.
-
Coincidence - A sequence of events that although accidental seems to have been planned or arranged.
Having a Cid, chocobos, summons, etc in every game is not coincidence, it's tradition. It's done on purpose.
Most 'coincidences' involving IX are planned, since IX referenced tons of things in other FF's. Square likes to allude to it's other works.

Uhm people, most RPG games have a lot of the same aspects, not just Square-enix games. You know, join together save the world from some person/thing trying to destroy it. A lot of the weapons are the same because of old legendary weapons in history, like excalibur and the masamune.
Definitely not coincidence, I mean, the summons/espers/GFs... and other names have mainly the same names/characters in all the FF games with them, ie III and above.
No game is a complete re-haul of an old one though. Obviously they are going to have a lot of common, cause why change such a good thing, but obviously they have to make it seem like a new game. I mean, the important things that make it final fantasy are the same. The battle system, character choices, except II and IV i believe.
I mean, they're a company making a lot of money on a game... Here's an interesting tidbit, does anyone know why they called it Final Fantasy in the first place. I heard it was because the company wasn't doing well and was going to close down, and it was it's last game, IE FINAL, and they wanted it to do really well, IE FANTASY, so it was their Final Fantasy, but it became huge, so they survived and now are one of the biggest game producers, especially for third party.
OK now I am done
