It didn't seem like it, so I went ahead and timed the beginning battle in the ship with the boss on 'normal' and 'fast' battlespeeds.
The actual battle (from the moment the swirling effect that leads into the battle is done to when the boss screams UAGH) took
Seconds with Normal Battle Speed: 40
Seconds with Fast Battle Speed: 37
That's about a 7-8% difference. No point to it really.
Yeah, it goes from extremely slow to rather slow. FF9's battle engine really ruins the game for me. the ATB is slow, the loading times are long. You need haste on your party and slow on the enemies to notice the ATB is actually there. It takes like 5 seconds from you tell zidane to attack to when he actually strikes the enemy. And this is a pre-emptive attack. It's even more for skills and magic.
They simply put too many details in the game. The PS1 can't handle it all. In FF8, they had a better balance. That game's battle system is smooth and fluid.
3 seconds X 1,000 battles per game = 3,000 seconds = 50 minutes. Congratulations, you've just saved an hour of your life! :yay:
I've had the same complaints. When starting a new game in any FF, maxing out the Battle Speed is one of the first things I do before I really dig in. I've always hated that about IX. The speed of both VII and X-2's battle systems were great (one of the few things I really liked about the latter game).
It really doesn't make a difference. All it does is make the battle go by faster. Plus, the enemies' battle speed will be the exact same.
That's the point of it being the battle *speed*, for fastness.
Slowness is for n00bs who freeze up every time they have to make a decision (like me:D)
Does that mean the player has more turns over the enemy than he would on normal speed?Quote:

i like active battle where the boss can attack while youre making a decision. its extreme! with the other option u can take as long as you want and the boss wont attack while yuore making a choice. i think.
