What's with that red rectangular splotch in the banner in the EoFF 2005 forum style? :p

That's where an advertisment goes.

That red is annoying though until the ad fills it in. Can't it be brown or some other neutral colour instead of red?

It's to serve people right for not displaying advertising in a mean and horrible and mean attempt at screwing EoFF out of money!

Red is clearly a better colour then brown.
