Not that I know of. I think it's great, myself.
Try playing the original FF1, no DoS business.
Way better, fonts and all.

The japanese fonts of DoS are so much better than the ones in the English Translated version, which are thin, too short and general nasty.
I don't have any problem reading the text.
What may help with the font issue is to change the text box color to solid black, so the white stands out a bit more.
