Does anyone how to repair a playstation 2 that has stopped reading discs. A solution that doesn't involve buying a new one would be greatly appreciated.

It depends on why it stopped. The ribbon could just be loose.
Ok...what does that mean and how would I go about correcting it? I'm not entirely sure if that is why it stopped.
Before you start fiddeling with the inards, i'd suggest you try standing it upright. If it's the old "Disc read error" problem. Or if you already have it upright do vise versa and lay it flat.
Yeah I've tried that. It worked once, but doesn't anymore.
Helloooo, I bought a the new slimline PS2 at christmas and it stopped reading my disks in like, February :S
I looked in the box, and in the user manual there should be a contact number. When I rung them, they said that they will take my PS2, and replace it with a new one, free of charge :) Not only that, but I only had to wait less than a week for a new one. Woohoo
So try looking in the manual thing and see if that helps! :)
Mine's an old one. Over two years old so the guarantee has most likely expired. Thanks though.
Ahh damn it :( Thought I'd mention it incase
Buy a new.... oh wait.
Seriously though, my first PS2 did that and I eventually gave up on it.
Even if the warrenty is out, you can still get it fixed for a small fee.
Only result to fixing it yourself as a last resort and your confident in your ability not to mess anything else up. If you are you can open up your PS2 and there are 5 ribbons in it. The ends all have little white tips on them that plug into little "obvious" recepticals near the ribbons. One could have been knocked loose.
I think I may just buy a new one...
Cheers for the help anyway people, I fancy one of those new slimline ones, c'mon student loan! This one's knackered anyway. Getting it repaired is gonna cost about £50 and a new machine will only be about £30 more depending on where I get it.
