You never get to take it away. All you can do is look at it, in his house.
I think the biggest bonus from doing that side-quest is the knowledge that you've made an old man happy. It's a spiritual, rather than material, gain.

Actually, he sends it to Tantalus HQ in Lindblum, and you can look at it there.
Yep, that's it. All I remembered was that you don't get to keep the model, merely to look at it.
