it's america yet again taking care of america and screwing anyone else. the only thing that mattered when making the decision was the US dollar and how rich it can get. nothing else.
Seeing as the US footed the bill to set up the DNS framework in the first place I don't see how this is bad.
This pissed me off when I first heard about it. Nothing's changed about my attitude since then.
I agree with it. We set it up and payed for it. I don't see a problem with keeping it under our control. It may be for selfish reasons but oh well.
Just a question though. Why is this such a big deal anyways?
it should be open source. anybody should be able to set up their own domain. Besides which, if Michael Moore is right and the right wing is facsist, then they could shut down the servers and no one would be able to use the internet.
They haven't done so yet, and they've been controlling it for how long?
There needs to be some control over the Internet, especially when it comes to maintaining the framework. It really doesn't bother me since, yeah, the U.S. government was the original body who spearheaded the development of the Internet back in the 1980's. I do think, however, that over time we should start relinquishing control of the root Internet servers over to a U.N. agency. After all, the Internet is shared throughout the world.
I suppose ideologically it is presumptuous for one country to retain control of the basis of the Internet, but practically, it would take the US billions they're too busy spending in Iraq to transfer partial or total control to a body like the UN.
I'm pretty indifferent. The US government footed the bill and was mostly responsible for its formation - it has the right to retain control. That's the government's choice to make, which is another reason I'm against government-sponsored projects.
