no rest for the wicked
tonight i will not sleep. why? it's a test. a time ago someone refered to the sleep depravation regarded as torture in quantanamo to be nothing but an inconvience.
i'm in fairly good shape. good diet and exercise routines. i normally get alot of sleep.
it's just to see what i make of it.
i'm gonna use this thread to journal the reaction my body takes of not being able to rest.
to detail i am a ride operator at a theme park which is light exercise depending on the ride (blood dodgems get stuck). and i'll continue doing that for 7 hours a day while i am doing this. (no i am not endangering anyone as i am only in charge of automatic rides becuase of my age and i have done it blind drunk like evryone else there and most people act like i probably will be anyway). i will give up either when i realise that this is all a bad idea and might get me sacked. or because of the phyisical exhaustion i am unable to continue.
first of all does anyone have experience of what i will go through? and is anyone willing to take part in the experiment and share their experience as well?
it is purely a test to see whether forced sleep depravatoin is torture.
ps. this is not a real quantanamo thread and so no views on it are needed or wanted on here. it is purely about the sleep depravation of anyone willing to join in and the possible implications.

How do you plan to not fall asleep?
Sleep deprivation is probably different than insomnia. Insomnia you want to sleep but just can't and you walk around tired and drained all the time but there can never be relief. It is pretty wierd and just an annoyance. But it also depends on how long it goes on for.
-
i hadn't thought about a way to actually force myself to stay awake except for will power.
-
it's fun, around 5 am you'll start getting an rush that won't stop until about 9pm.
-
Without the help of someone or something to keep you awake I'm betting you won't make it more than 2 nights. After that you'll probably fall asleep without even realizing it until you wake up.
-
so is there a way to force it? without disturbing the neighbours.
-
Keep yourself busy, listen to movies or play videogames, but whatever you do, dont read.
-
depends on who you are.. Personally for me a good book is the best way to stay up.. I have done 2 or so nights of just reading.. Needed a fair amount of aspirin though... eye strain headaches suck.. bad.
But yeah just keep busy. AND NEVER LIE DOWN.. not even for abit of eye rest.. trust me it don't work.
Also don't use too much caffine a bit can help but too much can make you more tired. Similar to sugar the rush is good but it wears off and leaves you more drained.

Broadband makes it easier. Dont do much in phsical activites through the day. Diet Coke or powerade is good if you want something to drink and theres no coffee around.
-
If I were you I would try to have at least one friend over after your first day or so to keep you awake. Really, another person is the best way.
-
Rotate friends and have them keep you awake. There is no way you will make it to day 3 without falling asleep if you only have will power.

sleep deprivation
hey i have not slept for 3 days 1 time and it is very tiering and hard on the body as well you will feel really weak and unable to do nethin but if u fight it for too long you wont b able 2 do a **** thing. . . sleep is essential for your body to work so no sleep means no work and then no money. . . but if thats wat u want to do then do it i cant stop u. . . the main way i stayed up is by drinkin a pot of coffee by myself a day. . . lol. . . but ill cya :D

Sleep deprivation is fun! It's really not all that bad, maybe cause I have at least 8 caffeinated drinks a day...

I don't think forcing yourself to stay up for a few days will really duplicate the effects of sleep deprivation. The biggest part of sleep deprivation is the psychological factor. Take a look at Chinese water torture- if you stick your head under a sink, there's no stress whatsoever, but when somebody ties you down and does it to you against your will, you freak out really quickly.
Oh well. The only advice I've heard about staying awake... when you lay down, hold a wooden or metal pole above your forehead, so that if you fall asleep, you'll let go and get bonked awake.
