Sonic and Knuckles both turn Super/Hyper on a Double Jump, but in order to trigger Knuckles' Glide, you have to Double Jump.
There, by a sheer matter of not being annoying, I'll go for Sonic, since his progression through levels does not require a double jump and means that you don't waste rings on going Super/Hyper.
Knuckles is cool, but Sonic is just better. In fact, i'd say he's the greatest game character of all time. Yeah, he is!
Knuckles.
Tails is the best one but I'll go with Sonic since I can't spell echidna.
Shadow.
Buut.... if I had to choose b/w Sonic and Knuckles, I'd say Sonic. Knuckles is waaaay to gullible, and he breaks the Master Emerald too much.
Shadow is just Sonic but to appeal more to the Ghetto and you know it.
Sonic, I guess. I always like Tails the most.
