Red is male. It's obvious Caith Sith is a muppet! And Reeve is 100% man; unless he is a female with a facial hair problem!
they can both wear the escort guard, which is the male-only armor. they, as in cait sith and red XIII.
as for reeve, if he WASNT male, id be worried. *IF (and i mean a real BIG if) they ever redo this game for PS3.. reeve just might be lookin good. oh hell.. they all would. esp. vinny boy.
