A Linux question and a backup question.

Two questions on my mind.

1. I may be getting a new monitor. In KDE, though, I noticed that the highest resolution you could set is 1024x768. I read that this is a lock placed by the xorg.conf, so I added a new resolution to the "Screen" section, rebooted, but then I was still limited to 1024x768. How can I allow larger resolutions?

2. I may look into a new hard drive. My 9gb drive has all my XP stuff on it, and I was wondering how difficult it would be to just image it over to a partition on another drive and be able to boot into it. Is there an easy way to do this, or would it just end up causing a lot of conflicts? It'd be nice if I could just copy it all over to a new partition and point my bootloader to it, but I have this feeling it'll be a bit more involved than that.

2. You can use the dd command within Linux to do this. Here's an article that might help. It's not too tough to do if you know what you're doing.

I only added a higher resolution to the 24bit mode, since that's what I should be using.

Actually, the monitor I'm looking at is widescreen (1280x854 is the actual resolution, oddly enough, but it's recommended at 1280x768), but I wanted to test it with a resolution that my current monitor could handle, just to see if I could get it working.

Try commenting out all the resolutions except the desired one and restart Xorg. If I recall corretly "nvidia" denotes the official nvidia drivers while "nv" denotes the dummy drivers.

Check your refresh rates to, and make sure they are within the monitors specifications.

As for the drive imaging, I read the article and one key thing that may be a problem is the cylinder size. He says that a difference in cylinder sizes may cause it to not work. Is that of much concern?

If you do a dd from one drive to another it's going to create a partition that's 9GB on the other drive, right? That's probably not what you want. I'd just install and mount the new drive, and cp -a from the old drive to the new. It's guaranteed to work, for one thing, whereas dd is not. (If you're copying a bunch of Linux stuff to a new drive too, be careful trying to copy /dev or /proc or anything like that. It probably won't copy properly.)

You should not be using the DRI module if you're using NVidia's driver. I doubt this is causing your problems however. Yes, "nv" is the default xorg driver and "nvidia" is the on from NVidia; you should generally use "nvidia".

Check /var/log/Xorg.log or wherever the logs are stored on your system.

It's just an NTFS drive with XP on it, so that shouldn't be a problem.

The xorg.conf is more or less stock from what was setup after installing the nvidia drivers using apt, but I'll try commenting out the DRI module.

Yeah, see all those "horizontal refresh out of range" warnings there. Try what Yamaneko said, with your refresh rate. You'd have to look it up in your monitor's documentation. I've had problems with screen resolution too when the refresh rate was wrong or not specified in xorg.conf. If worse comes to worse you may have to google for a modeline for your monitor, even. To get my widescreen monitor to work at 1680x1050 it took me forever to get the right modeline.
