personally i would have to say Cloud,Barret,and Red VIII:tongue:

It can be any character just put down your

technically it's more like Cloud, Barret, and Cid because their final limit breaks all hit more than once, and limit breaks are really the only difference in this game...

on my first game i played as cloud tifa and barret. i considered changing barret for cid but didnt. on my second i replaced barret with vincent. i always keep the main male and female together though because it usually (especially in FF8.) makes the storyline better.

I played the whole game as Cloud, Tifa, and Vincent.

The best ....

I think any team featuring Cait Sith is the best, because Cait Sith is a pretty cool guy.

That's right!!!

As ljkkjlcm9 said it's Cloud, Cid and Barret. Through this evaluation of characters I will ignore Cait Sith after typing about him once.

At the end (Lv.4):
Arguably Cait Sith Wins (he has a one hit kill any enemy move-which you can make easier to use by pressing some button, kind of like opening the disk tray with Selphie but slightly less cheep)
1. Cloud (Omnislash is omnipotent)
2. Barret (Ungarmax or Catastrophe, but I fing Barret weak until then, of course it's very easy to get limits quick)
3. Cid (Highwind)
4. Yuffie (Doom of the Living)
5. Tifa (Probably deserves to be lower down as it takes a little for her limit to execute but she has 7 strong attacks)
6. Red XIII (stardust ray I think it's called)
7. Vincent (Chaos is good but it doesn't come near standing up to the others)
8. Aeris (she might win with Fury Brand and Great Gospel but she's dead... YAY)

To note: Most of these character do less damage with their limits with 255 strength then a MP turboed KoTR which does 13x9999, and if I remember right Vincent's Chaos does less per turn then a 4xCut, making him weak.

With Level 3 limits (not getting the best stuff):
1. Barret (Ungarmax is learned at level 3)
2. Cloud (with meteorain+finishing touch he has a lot of hits)
3. Yuffie (Doom of the Living)
4. Red XIII (stardust ray is level 2)
5. Tifa (6 strong hits)
6. Cid (His best is big brawl or dragon dive at this point)
7. Vincent (What does he have then, Hellmasker???)
8. Aeris (Fury Brand is excellent but she dies... YAY)

My Overall Evaluation of Characters (in order of occurance in game):
Cloud, omnislash is amazing and his other limits are always excellent for where you are. He is also excellent in various challenges because of his high stats and strong limits.
Party Spot: Main Character
Challenge Spot: Main Character

Barret, Ungarmax gives 18 hits at level 3 and Catastrophe isn't bad either. I dislike his earlier limit breaks but they can be helpful (mindblow on Midgar Zolum is sweetness). He has high life and low MP. He is a very good choice for a character because of his excellent later limits.
Party Spot: Secondary Character
Challenge Spot: Third Character

Tifa, one of my favorite playable characters has low life and kinda low attack too. Her limits aren't too great (5th twice is below average) but mor importantly there fun. She's an excellent storyline character who deserves to be used even if her stats don't. And don't get me wrong- she's fine, just most other characters are better.
Party Spot: Possible Option, good if you use storyline characters
Challenge Spot: Weak... not worth thinking about in most.

Aeris, my most hated character in this game. She has weak stats though if you steal the fighting staff earlier her attack can be okay. She has excellent limits offering you healing, limits, and invincibility.
Party Spot: She dies... hahahahahaha. LAST
Challenge Spot: Excellent for first disk as healing is very important

Red XIII, cool character with good stats and pretty high HP. He get an amazing limit very earlier with stardust ray and then slowly falls in the rankings from best at level 2 to 6th at level 4.
Party Spot: Maybe early on.
Challenge Spot: Good stats, early good limit, he's pretty good.

Cid, gotta love him! Cid has good stats, good limits and is a great choice with a subtle, sophisticated script.
Party Spot: 3rd Character (unless you prefer Yuffie).
Challenge Spot: He'd by third character but Barret is better.

Yuffie, the stunning precursor to such as Selphie and Rikku. Yuffie became one of my favorite characters in the game during my third playthrough (I think) and has stayed in my party ever since. Her powerful limits combined with healing ones, and her overall awsomeness make her awesome.
Party Spot: First person to go in from the bench
Challenge Spot: 2nd Character (her healing is a must)

Vincent, I'm sorry Vincent fans, Vincent is cool. I'm not a fan and I think he's worse then most of the other character but that's cause they're good not cause he's bad. He's fun to use because his limits are cool but they're not that good. His death penatly works well with 4xCut making him more useful then his limits make him out to be. The fact that his limits heal him is good in challenges.
Party Spot: No... unless you really want him, but still not for me
Challenge Spot: Possible 3rd

Cait Sith, many hate him but he sacrifices himself nobly and I really like the character. He finds himself on both sides and I wish he had gotten more development. His stats are also good, and his dice can do a ton of damage when you first get him... of course no one actually uses him. His later limit can blow out Ruby or Emerald but it's very cheep. If you're not a cheep person he has little value.

i use Cloud, Yuffie and Tifa cause i like those characters but I can't use any data anymore cause both my memory cards have now corrupt (one today and one a year ago) so all my data (one ff7 slot on its own was the ultimate data - 150+ work on it and i LOST IT!!!!!!!!! stupid memory card, im very upset)

i agree with jackal, i use barret n tifa til i get to junon, then barret n yuffie til rocket town, then barret n cid til the end.

btw, i don't know anyone who uses cait sith other than u psychotic. i hav personally used him once, wen i first got him n had to find barret in the prison, THAT's IT!!!

Any team with Nanaki is the best!!...... except when Cat Sith is in there.....:mad2: :mad2:

For me, the best team had to be Cloud, Cid and RedXIII. Vincent proved to be fairly handy as well though, can have so many great teams!
