Yep.
Basically, he can master the same section of the sphere grid as any other character early on. It all depends on what skills and stats you want to boost first.
I would suggest to put all your characters on Aurons sphere grid and wakas, except lulu shes more of the magic type =/.
I like taking kimarhi out through rikku's grid then hopping over onto Yuna's where she has her good magic at 8)

its handy for Kimahri to know steal for later in the game :)
take kimahri wherever you wan't he'll enjoy the ride
There are certain bosses in the game that are made much easier if Kimarhi has Steal, Dispel and Reflect, so go down into Rikku's grid and move into Yuna's soon after.
Kimahri is the only FFX character that doesn't really have his own "path". I mean he does, but it's quite easy to veer off and follow someone else- this opportunity presents itself early in the game.
