I saw this ages ago on my favourite FF7 fan fic site (and probably favourite fan fic stories EVER). Unfortunately it's long since departed, which is a shame as the stories were top notch. Should've saved them...

I bet you the majority of final fantasy 7 fan art is pretty old. I bet you the majority of ff7 fan art you see around the internet was made in the '97,'98,'99 range. When bunches and bunches of people were still playing the pretty new ff7 and before anything else had yet to come out to take their interest away from it.
Alot of people still play it nowadays for the first time as well. But it probably doesn't receive the attention from new gamers like it used to once they complete it. Because once done they will just pick up a different and newer rpg to play instead of crazing over it like they used to because it was still the newest thing going.
