Just try and beat the Wutai sidequest, don't try progressing the game, it's really not going to work.
"You can't get across the fire-pits yet unless you've gotten the Leviathan Scales (Disc II) from the Junon Underwater Mako Reactor."

You don't need to do that until later, it doesn't effect the sidequest at all. :cat: :)
