Since when? I had a theif in my party and whenever I tried to run my fighter did the running. I thought maybe he just needs to level up some, well I leveled up ALOT and still my fighter ran more than him. Do you have to be half-way through with the game just for his ability to kick in?? Does he have to be a freaking ninja?? Becuase the theif is pretty much useless to me now, his attacks suck, he has no magic, and my fighter runs more than he does, I don't see what good he brings to my party.
Sorry your experience with the Thief running is so bad. He's always pulled out for me. I should know, since I beat the game at lv. 11 (Was at ToF at level 11. Apparently, we all know that I was forced to 14 before I reached Chaos...), and I only could do it by having my Thief run from nearly all the battles. Fighter wasn't making it away in my game.
Is you Thief failing to run? Or is your Fighter simply getting a chance to run first and succeeding? Because if it's the latter, then that's all it is, and the Thief will be useful on the day that the Fighter simply can't run. If and when that day comes.
AND, when the Thief becomes a Ninja, you'll be glad to have him. Or even once you get him the Rune Sword, he becomes an on par fighter.
Theif being useful in the game is a debate that causes a big riff in the game. Some people claim they are the all awesome and that blackbelts are worthless. Some claim that the black belt is more useful. I personally find the BB better. There's never been a fight on the NES version that I've failed to run from without a theif by the second turn. The magic he learns is completely unnecessary. Just a novelty to make people think he's cool. The katana for a theif is a fairly strong sword, but nowhere near the damage producing capabilities of a bare-handed BB. A lot of people whine about how much a BB dies, but that all comes down to playing style. Mine never dies and I keep him in the second slot below my Knight.
Which version of the game are you playing? I've never seen a Thief failing to escape battles on NES, unless it's a fight with no escape (bosses, some certain enemies). He still escapes quite often on WSC, although he can fail, and I think it's a bit like that on PSX too. I don't know about DoS, but the Thief can hit the enemies there so many times that it's already a good reason to have him in the party.
Right. I'm talking about the NES version.
The DoS is so easy that you could probably make it through with a BB in your party. (I want to counter Undead Hero here and represent the "BB DIES BEFORE IT CAN HIT OPPONENTS AND IS THEREFORE USELESS" Club.)
The really sad truth, however, is that Thief and BB are both unnecessary for an enjoyable F/?/WM/BM game because putting a Fighter in that second slot is 10 times as good because a Fighter dishes it out hardcore without ever dying (Better than a BB) and he can run or Dish it out Hardcore without Dying (Better than a Ninja)
But you'll be glad in the End when the Ninja can cast FAST and wear Ice Armor and Flame Shields and Healing Helmets giving him the ability to be a versatile healer (During those battles then you heal up w/ the heal staff, and have the Ninja's Heal Helm too), and he'll also be able to resist Fire, Ice, and Rub so it'll hardly be necessary for him to wear a Ribbon. And he can run... In Fact...
Which version are you playing TC? Because on the PSX version or any version like that, running is random.
However, on the nes version, if any character's luck is 15 or higher and they are in the 1st or 2nd slot. They will run away 100% of the time. Except against bosses and some other enemies.
So if you are playin the nes version you should move your thief to the 2nd slot.
on the DoS version, thief runs even less frequently than other characters... although as a fighter, he's almost as good as... well... fighter.
i liked the NES thief better... he was less useful but had more character :)
