Well, you're right about the regional dialectal part. I believe that up north it's primarily pop (although it's pronounced PAAAAAAAP,) and somewhere else (I'm not sure where) it's soda. Down here in the South (Tennessee, specifically), it's all usually Coke. For example, if you were organizing something, you'd say, "Hey, Jim, do we have any Cokes?" and Jim would assume you meant soft drinks in general. However, for a specific brand, you say Sprite or Dr. Pepper. Lemon Lime soft drinks (including 7-UP) are all Sprite, by the way. But, down here in Redneck Country, you say COKE for soft drinks in general. I voted for soda just because I don't like the way you northern (especially Chicago area) people say paaaaap.
