Its kind of making me think of the date thing, but there is a limit to that and there are three results possible....
the gold saucer itself, you have to go there once and there are two pathways into the place, but one quickly becomes closed
... no I take that back
is it the prison, you must go there once, there are two ways to get there, and one becomes permenantly closed quickly, but as long as you have the buggy you can still get there as many times as you want

It hasn't got anything to do with Cosmo Canyon, does it? You can go UP to the observatory, or DOWN into the Cave of the Gi, but that path is quickly closed (and you must go to both at least once).
