Why don't FF party members sometimes have a change of heart and randomly leave the party forever? NO Shadow doesn't count.

Because if they tried to then the bad guy would come in and say "I have your mother in my secret lair!!!" Then he would dissappear and the person trying to leave would be like "Oh snap!!!" then you would all run off to save the mum from certain death. When you rescue her you also get the brownie item.
