Doesn't matter if people were reading them in the 90s or not. The most recent book came out in 2011, and the show started in 2011. I know they're massive books, but I think people could read all five in three years if they were really that concerned.
Like I said, I don't go out of my way to spoil people, and I've even asked to have things hidden that aren't out-right spoilers, but could still spoil some people. But at the same time, I don't think people should expect to be coddled about spoilers. Especially when no one is directly spoiling you. Shaibana's example is someone being troutty. Carl's example of just reading YouTube comments is no one's fault but his own. People are allowed to discuss it in open forums. It's a 20-year-old series. And even if you just consider the interest since the show started, that's still three years. If in 2008 I had heard someone complaining because someone told them Snape killed Dumbledore, I would've said tough titties.
tl;dr I'm not in the habit of spoiling people, and I try to not be a dick and protect people when I can (e.g. having mods spoiler things, putting spoiler tags on my own posts, discussing things on Facebook IM instead of making statuses about it when I COULD), but I don't feel bad at all for people who are getting spoiled. I'm not saying someone has to read the books if they don't want to, just that the information is out there and you are in control of what you know.

I had never even heard of Game if Thrones until the show started. Some fans weren't even smurfing born yet when the series began. The attitude of "well you should have read it if you didn't want it spoiled" is a little annoying to me because, well, it's not as if I had someone trying to cram these books down my throat all my life and I actively avoided them. I kindof love the fact that there are masses of fans who have not read the books and to gauge the reactions of people via social media or whatever who experience these crazy smurfing plot twists that this story has to offer.
I get where shaibana is coming from with not wanting to know what happens before it happens in the show. Some people just aren't interested in knowing the story unless it comes from the show. Have you seen the smurfing size of the books he writes? I don't blame them.
Once the show is good and well over, that would be a different case. But it's not, and I don't believe anyone should be faulted for not wanting anything spoiled when they haven't yet read the books no matter when they came out, because it isn't relevant. Additionally, Spider-Man rules apply when you already have read them.
Just try to handle it how you would it want to be handled if you were a new fan and relying on the show to give you your story.

I, too, found myself bothered with Danaerys.
A bit disappointed! Felt like there wasn't much substance to this first episode at all. Maybe it's the calm before the storm. Felt like they tried to squeeze in too much and didn't really leave room to develop a good opening episode because of it.
What exactly is the problem with Danaerys? Sure she hasnt done anything particulary special this episode but not every episode can be all fire and blood.

I really enjoyed watching Game of Titties tonight. HBO Go is completely horrid so I had to leave New York just to go and watch this on a Verizon Fios cable box. It was totally worth it just for that ending.
There's nothing wrong with Danaerys, she just has the most boring storyline. It doesn't help that the people she gets to interact with are mostly sycophants.
Arya is my favorite but damn she was disturbing in this episode. I wouldn't call smiling as you stab someone through the throat as being badass so much as it's smurfing creepy as hell. I don't know what she's becoming.
Loving the stuff with Jamie. Interesting new dynamic he has with his family now.

I don't know how many people know, but that Arya kill scene was VERY familiar to something in a future book. I'm not really going to say which one, because I know people will start hissing. But I just had to point out that it was taken almost word for word. Seeing her do it this soon is a bit interesting though.
And there's so many things wrong with Daenerys. I hate her smurfing smug god complex. She (and many other people) think she's immune to fire. I hope to the Old Gods we find out how full of trout that crackpot theory is. Just sayin.
Props to the show for showing off bisexual Prince Oberyn. It is, however, awkward to learn that I've been mispronouncing his name for the last six years, though.

The scene with Sandor and Arya in the bushes almost felt Monty Python-esque. Loved it.
Also, for book readers, (SPOILER)did any of you catch the Ygritte foreshadowing? Deliberate close-up of her pruning her feather fletches. When Jon finds her body it is by identifying the fletches that he determines it wasn't one of his arrows that killed her. :cry:

Good opening episode! Arya finds so much chemistry with these gruffy characters. First Tywin, now the Hound. I kind of want Arya's storyline to be about her and the Hound traveling the world on a quest of revenge. It was pretty creepy when she smiled while stabbing that guy though.
Also any scene in King's Landing is entertaining. The Wall stuff wasn't bad either.
Jamie was hilarious in this episode. "If you love it so much how about you cut off your hand and take it yourself?"

Pretty good opening episode. The version of Rains of Castamere in the first scene, and the closing rendition of the theme song were both GORGEOUS. Love.
Is there supposed to be a bit of a time lapse between the end of season 3 and the beginning of season 4? The dragons have tripled in size and they're out of the desert.
The title of the episode was aptly titled, "Two Swords", but so far we only saw Jaime's... currently unnamed sword. Why wasn't the other sword shown?
I really like Styr. To see him intimidate Tormund was impressive as smurf. I also loved the return of a few hated characters we haven't seen since S1/2. Alliser Thorne and Janos Slynt. I thought it was a typical and brilliant GoT episode. Not too much action besides the Hound kicking ass, but from a storytelling standpoint, it was magnificent. This isn't The Walking Dead where it has to be action packed to grip anybody. Their strength is in storytelling, so I personally hate it when people think an episode is lackluster because 590282090 people weren't put to the sword.
Hahahaha. I'm shocked anybody hates her to be honest. I thought I was the only one. I'm sick of her being promoted as one of the lead characters in this series. It's ONLY because the actress is beautiful, I swear. And you're right, I was certainly happy. I was concerned they wouldn't show it, and especially not this early. Bit bold when they're trying to give people a good first impression on who this Prince is. But they kinda swept it under the rug immediately by showing how vicious the Red Viper is. I don't hate her, other characters are just stealing the spotlight from her for me right now.
After season 3's ending, I'm actually excited to see what comes next with Dany. Yeah, I SAID IT.
I'm just a little annoyed that I've gotten so much trout for not liking Dany (not just Emilia Clarke, but her character/storyline as well) and I got so much trout for it. And now everyone in this thread is all "Eh, she's boring now, I don't like her." It's dumb.
Mine comes from reading A Dance with Dragons between the seasons which caused an ever-growing sense of dread every time a chapter with her name came up :p
I'm not the biggest Daenerys fan, but I don't hate her. I found some of her chapters really boring, though.

I understand the dislike/hatred of Dany around this time in the show/book but not from the very beginning.
