But in name only (the flying eyeball monster in FFX bears little resemblance)

The FFVIII version (called Buel) looks a lot more like the mythological demon.

From the first paragraph I'm thinking it could be Yu-Yevon, due to the part about being worshipped, though the second paragraph sounds more like Evrae's second form.

Ya its gotta be yu yevon because he is in ancient times and people worship him and many repented to him. and well it cant be evrae because fire and bolt doesent really effect him much. and it is true that yu yevon lost his light and turned evil so it has to be yu yevon.
