What a great smurfing episode. I was reeled in from the beginning straight until the end - from the slaves and Danaerys to Jaime's wrestling with love and loyalty to Littlefinger's confession to Margaery and her grandmother's cunning to the smurfing hard-to-watch Crastor's Keep scenes to the smurfing white walker lair. All of it amazing, best of the season yet. The only way it could have been better is if Tyrion's trial was squeezed in there somehow! Great, great stuff.
The trippiest part about that ending reveal about The Others is that the baby was surrounded by 13 white walkers, all wearing black from head to toe. The Night's King was purported to be the 13th Lord Commander of the Night's Watch, who was seduced by a white walker. This lead some to believe that the ranks of The Others and the Night's Watch might be connected somehow, perhaps even past lord commanders taking similar roles among The Others.
While I like the idea that it was the 13th Commander, I prefer to think it had something to do with The Last Hero, who went beyond the wall with 12 companions to try and find the Children of the Forest. I think it fits better with where the story seems to get going, due to the parallels of TLH with Azor Ahai.
Overall, I think it was a solid episode and, while I understand the complaints about the ending spoiling things that haven't yet happened in the book timeline, I am okay with the story moving at a faster pace than the books are. I am also okay with the show building off or creating its own lore rather than trying to race GRRM to the finish line.

Good episode especailly with the Hound. I don't like that Bran made Hodor kill someone but I guess it adds to the drama.
Littlefinger/Lysa being behind Jon Arryn's murder and framing the Lannisters has to be a retcon. It doesn't make any sense in the context of the first season. Really good episode though! A lot happened!
Loved the episode, particularly surrounding the solving of several unexplained mysteries surrounding season one. The death of Jon Arryn is now explained, while the fate of Syrio the water-dancer is now strongly implied.
Good episode, wrapped several things up, including Craster's Keep. I'm very excited for the next episode. The Brienne and Podrick partnership is just brilliant.
Lastly, whatever happened to Varys? We've really only seen him briefly this season.
Varys was in this episode briefly. He bowed to Tommen.

I really, really enjoyd Cersei's and Margaery's little chat at the beginning. It seemed clear to me at first that Cersei was intending to intimidate Margaery, and then she exposed weakness to her in a sense, admitting that her son doesn't need her help, but the help of another. I wonder if it's a trick somehow. Cersei doesn't seem the type to just roll over when her territory is being threatened. Then again, she is stricken with grief over Joffrey still, and grief makes people behave strangely.

I don't recall the name of the pleasant gentleman leading Craster's, but he just makes those smurfing scenes for me. I cringe whenever I see him. I loved him in The Dark Knight Rises and I love him in this, even if he's the worst smurfing villain beside Joffrey and Ramsay and that's why he's smurfing brilliant.
Can someone remind me who the dude was who was trying to kidnap Bran?
I'm really glad for Craster's wives standing up for themselves and not willing to go with the Night's Watch. I was beginning to question how logical it was that they would be comfortable with the Night's Watch there anyway, regardless if they came to save them or otherwise. That was a more believable path for them to me, I'm glad they took it.
A bit disappointed with the ending, though. Somehow. Don't know why. But it was so good to see Jon so happy to have Ghost back. I am really loving his character development.

I would have liked to see more Jaime in this episode.
And I find myself less and less impressed with The Hound/Arya scenes. Arya is so annoying to me now, god, I can hardly stand her.
I just re-read the first book recently. Littlefinger is set up with clear motivations from the beginning. They touched on it briefly on the show but they flesh out the story more in the books. The big motivation is being rejected by Catelyn as a child. She was betrothed to Brandon Stark (Ned's brother), Littlefinger challenged Brandon a duel and Brandon beat the crap out of him to the point that he was bedridden for weeks. Cat left and the next time Littlefinger saw her was when she showed up in King's Landing with the dagger. He's clearly still enamoured with her though she always saw him as a brother. He has pretty good reason not to like Ned Stark, since she ended up with him. I always saw that as a big part of why he betrayed Ned. That's also likely a big part of why he took Sansa with him to the Eyrie. He's always doing a lot of creepy hair-touching and "You look just like your mom"ming in the show when it comes to Sansa.Quote:

The second motivation is his low station. His family is lord of the Fingers, which is a reeeeeeeeally small crappy bit of land on the ocean, which is maybe partly why he couldn't be betrothed to Cat. People call him Littlefinger because of his land (and because he's short). He clearly has ambitions to be more and he's clearly got some issues about it. My read on his character is him getting back at everyone who he feels looked down on him or mistreated him in his life. He's accumulated a lot of power at this point and he's revelling in throwing it around. He's also just twisted/crazy/evil like everyone else in the GoT universe. Up to the point we're at in the show I don't think he ever had a point-of-view chapter from him yet, which lends his character a lot of mystery still. That's all just my take on it.
Lysa is also set up as being completely unhinged from the beginning. I wasn't surprised at all that she was behind Jon's death. Jon was planning to send his son to foster with Stannis or some other lord, to get him away from his mom, because his mom is being a bad influence. Maybe the whole breast-feeding-him-at-age-6 thing had something to do with it... blergh. All Lysa cares about is keeping her son around. Shorty is right, her actress is really good. She and her son creep the crap out of me.
Whether GRRM planned all of this ahead of time or came up with it as he wrote the latter books, beats me. As of book one / season one of the show, who poisoned Jon and who was responsible for attacking Bran with the dagger are both left unexplained. As of the end of book one, he must've planned to either explain it later or leave it all a mystery. Either way it makes for a pretty cool story. (Turns out he does eventually explain who was behind both of those things, in the books.)

He's an opportunist. When the Queen of Thorns wanted Joffrey dead, Littlefinger stepped in. When other powerful figures wanted Jon Aryn dead before that, Littlefinger was also there -- and has been there to take advantage of what resulted at every opportunity. Power and revenge are all that matters. The whole theme of the books/show is that ruthless scheming is what succeeds, and Littlefinger has clearly been the epitome -- even a caricature -- of that principle.
Didn't Varys say that Littlefinger was the most dangerous man in Westeros? I don't think he was joking.
I agree it makes sense in the grand scheme of things, but it seemed like an afterthought rather than the result of good planning. It was just weird that Littlefinger appeared out of nowhere to be 'the one behind it all' after not being on the show for a while. Seemed a little too convenient.
At least it makes you think. This was another strong episode. Season 4 is turning out to be the best season yet and there's still half of it to go!

Littlefinger wants to sit the Iron Throne. That's his goal. That's not a book spoiler as it's never been explicitly stated anywhere, but that's what he's up to, I am sure of it. Not sure what to think of Cersei this episode. She's been so cordial, a real change compared to previous episodes. What's happened?
A lot of people I know have said this episode sucked, I am so confused!
Littlefingers long term game playing finally coming to light? Awesome. The Adventures of Pod and Brienne? Awesome. A sword through the back of the head of the evil Nights Watch guy? Awesome. The Hound? Awesome. Mental Lysa? Awesome.
That being said, this episode did seem shorter to me than the other episodes & I'm not sure why... Was it?
Next episode needs more Varys, Wildlings and murder trial.

Jess, it probably felt short to you because they didn't really spend much time on one segment. Each segment only lasted a few minutes, and some characters only got a few minutes screen time.

Just saw the trailer for next episode. Stannis makes a return in the episode, Varys actually has a few lines as does the return of the small council actually having a meeting. Dany has more time, and the trial finally begins. Furthermore, Yara Greyjoy finally returns to the fold once more.
Feel free to watch it for yourself. I'm pretty excited!

I never cared much for Jon Snow and the Night Watch in the previous seasons. Don't know what it is about this season, but suddenly I find myself enjoying Jon more and more each episode.
I got whiplash from Locke. At first I hated him because dude you can't just cut off people's hands. And then I liked him because oh he's being a bro with Jon that's nice. And then he's a TRAITOROUS BASTARD SMURF

I think one issue with the pacing was that the episode seemed to largely focus on one area/group, do their part in full, then move onto the next one. Usually they jump between different groups several times throughout an episode.
I actually prefer that to all the jumping around. In fact I would prefer to watch a whole season devoted to Dany's storyline and ending it right when she arrives in Westeros (finally) and then ignoring her in the main storyline until the last season. Similarly for Jon and Bran's stories. This is an issue I have with the books as well. I have to turn back several (hundred sometimes) pages to the last POV chapter for that character in order to remind myself what happened in their story last. It's silly!

Littlefinger has mentioned a couple of times that he boned Cat, but Lysa mentioned in the last episode that it was her that he boned. Lysa has always been all about Littlefinger, but he wanted Cat and their father wouldn't let him marry either of them. He wants power, he wants wealth, and he wants the woman who scorned him. Or her daughter, apparently.

Arrested Development. Go watch it now. It's quite possibly the funniest show in television history. Make sure you start from the beginning though or the jokes won't make any sense.

This episode was so good. Finally some action! Everything Tyrion said was just wow. "I wish I was the monster you all think I am." Who is going to fight though? His father?
My guess is that his father will name the captain of the kingsguard to fight for the crown, which is of course Jamie. Tyrion will probably have to fight for himself if the thing even happens.
Good end to the episode as the trial was awesome as expected. I didn't care much for the first part of the episode that focused on Theon and Stannis. I really don't care much about them.
If Jaime quits the Kingsguard now Tyrion should be able to shotgun him as his Champion. Then Tywin will be forced to choose a weaker champion since he doesnt want his heir to die.
Also I cant remember if it's just because of Sirio in the show or if it was actually mentioned in the books but I thought the majority of Braavosi (and people across the sea from Westeros) were darker skinned or Braavos was atleast the most mixed race of cities. If that's so then I really hope they dont whitewash all the speaking parts in Braavos.
Good episode! And the next episode will look to be awesome with (SPOILER)that fight between Oberyn and the Mountain. (God, I've been waiting for that since episode one!!)

Everything has a consequence, and while I've loved Tyrion running his mouth at every single uppity and clueless smurfer in King's Landing, my God did it ever come back to bite him in the ass. The way he just snapped was stunning, unlimited love for Dinklage.
Also smurf you Shae. The books had none of the "wah wah you're trying to send me away :(" crap. She is just a lying backstabbing whore, exactly what she says she is.
I swear I remember a video trailer for this series having the participants of the fight quite prominently displayed.
They were covered in armour and it was only a quick flash. Besides, some people don't even watch trailers because of potential spoilers. So use the tags, eh? No harm in it!

I totally thoroughly enjoyed this episode. I know that a lot of this season is going to be build up, and I've come to terms with that.
But the episode was fantastic. It really really swelly built a stage for future events. And Tyrion's speech at the end. I will be damned, it was fantastic.
Honestly, I'm not feeling the hype for this episode. It wasn't bad, but I personally don't feel it's as mind-blowing as everyone is making it out to be.
Next episode (?) with the Trial by Combat should be on point, though.
That was a great episode, with a fantastic ending. The trial was really well done, filled with Tywin's deviousness and Tyrion's excellent acting -- and even some good development between Oberyn and Varys -- all capped with that brilliant rant that ended with tensions at the peak. It's been a while since I've been as eager to see the next episode.
Pretty sure he repeatedly states that he wants "it all" or "everything." I can wholly imagine him with a puppet on the throne, but the fact that he has come from nothing and created his own family crest shows desire to elevate himself and create a legacy. Tywin's not the only one fascinated with that, but I think Tywin is far more accepting of having someone else with the crown.Quote:

The part with Theon's sister (I forget her name in the show) was silly and contrived. "Hope you can outrun these dogs!" and suddenly she's teleported onto a boat. They didn't chase her? They didn't have archers on the walls? What was the point of any of that? It showed us Theon is crazy, but we already knew. The Ironborn plotlines all feel tacked on for no reason.
The Tyrion scene was pretty good. In the book I always pictured Shae hamming it up for the crowd and really twisting the knife, I didn't feel that as much in the show. Maybe it's just the missing element of surprise. Maybe her actress never clicked for me. I've read a lot of reviews saying Dinklage deserves a medal for his acting in this episode, but I'm not sure I see it. He acted, that's his job. He pulled off being hurt and angry. Everyone else was good too though. I think Tywin and Jaime knock it out of the park every time they're on screen.
I'd watch a whole season of Ser Davos telling people what's up while Stannis stands around glowering.
I think that Tyrion scene was quite effectful, but it's probably as much thanks to good writing, directing and editing as it is thanks to Dinklage's acting.
Agree with so many parts of this. I feel like Dinklage and Gillen's performances have become noticeably forced compared to what they did in the first season, probably since it's not their natural accent. Tywin, Jaime and Davos all did their thing though. Davos flipping numbers back on those bankers was just damn. And the other two just have some of the best scenes in the series imo. Most of it being original to the show, which makes it so confusing when they fail with utterly pointless scenes like the Greyjoy raid on the Dreadfort that never was.Quote:

next episode & further - book stuffI am SO excited for The Red Viper v The Mountain. I watch the show with 3 non book readers and they're all certain Tyrion is going to die and they're so sad. It makes it even more exciting to see their reactions.

I agree that Tyrion made that episode his, he was incredible and really made you feel the emotion that ran through him. Tywin likewise. Varys and Oberyn were also really cool, I agree with Jess on that. And Davos is one of my favourites, definitely. It was interesting to see the Iron Bank for the first time.
I agree that Shae in the show is terrible. I haven't gotten to her betrayal of Tyrion in the book yet but based on her book character it would make a lot more sense. I hope I see her head on a pike soon.

Holy trout, what an intense scene with the battle between Ramsay and Yara. Man, I keep feeling worse and worse for Theon. I disliked him quite during the first few seasons, but I feel so awful for him now. I can't imagine what it must be like to have fear cripple you so badly that when a rescue arrives you do not accept it.
The Danaerys scene seemed rather pointless. But I guess it opened up a segue for her to be spoken about in the council. I get the feeling that the dude begging for his father's bones has a trick up his sleeve somehow.
I love Varys more every time I see him. Same for Oberyn. I wasn't terribly fond of him at first, but I've grown to quite like him. His pure shock at Varys admitting to be asexual was hilarious xD
With the business with Shae being supposedly sent off, I almost didn't think they were going to bring her back. It was hard to watch her betray Tyrion so astoundingly. I loved them together before I knew what a backstabber she is :(

What a lovely violin solo after such a dark scene! Went more or less how I saw it going as I read this particular part. I wasn't able to fully immerse myself in the scene due to things going on around me while I was watching, so I feel a bit robbed on that account. Still, all of the anger and frustration and hate was clear to see upon Tyrion's visage as he delivered his "wish I had done it" speech.

Yeah, that sounds about right. And yeah, there's a reason Storm is the most highly regarded book in the series. So much epic trout goes down in that book.
I dont like the reasoning they gave for Jamie not to fight (because if he did fight then Cersei would have to chose someone to lose) but I guess they wrote themselves into a corner with him offering to give up the Kings Gaurd.

Dammit, was really hoping for combat by trial, but I guess that was a good surprise to go along with everything. Also, for the first time, we got to see two Stark girls feeling good about themselves in a single episode. Arya got to kill someone effectively and Sansa got a sense of relief that Joffrey was killed as revenge for her mother's death. The Starks have to take what they can get in this story...
Good to see hotpie, he loves his gravy hahaha. So now I would imagine Littlefinger will rule the eyrie(sp?) through Robin for a little while, I liked him untill he screwed Ned, now he's winning me over again the treacherous little snake.
The new Mountain is a beast, should be an interesting fight between him and Oberyn, cant believe we have to wait another week for that. Surprised Cersei didn't just have Bronn killed, he's so awesome though it would be a crime.
