The south hasn't messed up much, and it's typically only northern people who don't want to leave the north that believe that.

There is a reason the people in the north don't want to leave(despite harsh winters and other uncontrollable things). I don't think Kerry would have been much better but I think Gore would have done a much better job. Even more so with the current situation of an increased awareness on the environment.

It's up to the person listening to the song to determine if it sucks or not. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Saying the same thing repeatedly in a song is a part of music. It gives it a sense of pattern. That's why "hooks" are put in rap. Lastly, not writing your own lyrics is something I can't really agree with. However, the artists are paid to perform the music, not write it.

Yeah, because they don't know any better, and most people raised in the north think it to be so far superior. Granted a lot of the school in New England are better in general, but that area of the country is far from better. This coming from someone born and raised in MA. Great schools growing up, but I hardly think the north is better.

First of all, whether they suck or not is an opinion. Secondly, most songs say the same thing over and over again. Maybe not most rap songs, but most songs in general. Thirdly, lots of artists don't write their own lyrics, and I guarantee it's not every southern rap artist that doesn't write their own lyrics, just a handful you choose to point out.

First of all, whether are not it's my opinion, it's true. I could sing their lyric in my sleep after hearing them for the first time. Secondly, most songs may say the same things, but they all don't have the same flavor. Southern Hip Hop/Rap artist have the same exact feelings as their last song. Lastly, in Rap/Hip Hop, it's all about how you the artist feel. If some one wrote all of your songs for you, your as fake as breast implants.

Not writing your own lyrics is for assembly-line artists.
Btw, all music is (should be, anyway) about how the artist feels.

Anyone who doesn't write their own material isn't an artist, they're an art supply.

What are you saying? I agree that rap and Hip Hop are different. They're is a thin line between the two but they're different none to less.

We're both saying they're different. In what way they are different is where we seem to disagree.

I'm arguing that hip hop is the actual music, while rapping is the style in which the lyrics are spoken.

I listen to a bit of hip hop without any lyrics, and I can hear rapping in many other musical genres than where it's commonly found.

So, your sayin' Rap is more like poetry and Hip Hop is exactly what is shown?

I would say rap isn't just poetry, it's a technique. It's in what way you speak, and to a certain extent how you rhyme and stuff. This can be done both with and without a rhythm, but it would in most cases be easier do to it with one, I'd say.

The music that most rapping is done to to is what I think of as hip hop. This music can also be made without lyrics, for example RJD2 and DJ Shadow make hip hop and hip hop influenced music with few or no lyrics.

I think these two terms are sometimes not distinguished between because in almost all cases, rapping is done to hip hop music. I have however heard people rap to both techno, rock and metal too :p.

Thought it was relevant.

The lyrics don't need to have too much to do with the musical style of a song. If a metal band suddenly decided to sing about romance in one of their songs, the song could still be in the metal genre. Likewise, your typical pop singer could be singing about satan returning to earth and devouring souls, and it wouldn't count as metal :p.

Agreed. You see, I normally listen to old school Rap/Hip Hop artist. And when they do what they do, they don't beat around the bush. They get their point across swiftly and smoothly. And when I would hear a current Hip Hop/Rap artist from the south sing, it makes me sick! That's one of the main reason I don't even listen to the radio. And the current artist that are trying to keep Rap and Hip Hop alive are all not from the south. Bone Thugs -N- Harmony, Naz, Twista, Eminem, these are just a few examples of the ones truely holdin' it down for Hip Hop and Rap.

I don't like a lot of rap or hip-hop, but even I haven't been impressed with most people coming out of the South. I think Luda is smart as a whip, funny and skilled, but I still don't really like his stuff.

Really, I think both genre's are in a rut. They'll bounce out of it sooner or later.
