I'm not too familiar with the Beowulf story, but in terms of actual art direction and CG it looks completely horrible. They've wasted all their time and energy on trying to make such realistic graphics that in the end fall into the "uncanny valley" and lose a great sense of style.
There's a good reason why Spirits Within bombed outside of the Final Fantasy fan-base. In the end, they would have been far better off using the real actors.
;)
The original epic poem tale isn't very good for a movie. King makes monster mad. Monster kill King's men. Hero comes and kills Monster, make mommy mad, kills mommy, and then kills...a dragon? Que?
It might be doable -- but would suck. I personally enjoy the classics -- "Legend", and all that.
This is why english epics are :skull::skull::skull::skull:e...but they'll dress it up enough for it to be cool.
Yes.
I know you guys are all "but Beowulf is totally different from the story of the 300 spartans!" but c'mon. Just look at it. It's totally trying to be the next 300 from its cinematic look to its catchphrase ("I am ripper, tearer..." etc. just sounds like it's trying to force itself into pop culture like "This... is... Sparta!" except while being totally lame).
It could turn out good but I'm not counting on it.
Yeah that stuff is just producers being morans, maybe. I dunno. Lemme check the producers.
Hmm...maybe not. Damnit!
I actually am glad that they are making it a movie. I read it last year in my English 12 class and it was wierd cause when we were reading it, I made the comment out loud how bad ass it would be to see it in a movie and in a game, and then about a week before the semester ended, our teacher told us that they were makeing a movie and a game for it. So, Im stoked!
Ok, I just have to say. It makes me physically CRINGE when that dude says "I am BEOWULF!!" in the commercial. The way he expels the word "beowulf" really annoys me.
I would like to see him protect the queen. THAT would be epic.
i much more enjoy my friend's mockery of the movie than I will enjoy the movie itself, if I even see it. For example:
Got Medieval: Beowulf: The Footwear
Yup, plus it looks really cool imo. Anything that stars Angelina Jolie as a hot serpent-like monster is a must-see, really. Also, the whole thing with CGI designed to look realistic is quite interesting to me, and it'll be fun to see how far we've come in that department since The Spirits Within.
I think I've said this before, but I don't mind saying it again:
It's Neil Gaiman. I don't even need to see a trailer to tell you I'll be there. Nevermind the fact that I did see a trailer, and am equally dismayed by the visuals as most of you, but I'm seeing it anyway.
Dammit.
