The narratives are obviously what draw me in, but animation and music also play an important role. :)

I don't really watch anime anymore, but anime for me is all about the art.
It could have the best story line to man, but if it's drawn horribly I can't stand to watch it.
I also prefer anime's with more realistic tone's in the art over the CLEARLY big eye'd anime one's.

The fact that just about all series have a discernable beginning, middle, and end.
In most western series, the creators will keep milking the show until it utterly jumps the shark. In Japan, a show is usually planned out from beginning to end. This allows for more dramatic and unpredictable storytelling as opposed to the whole "lets just keep things going until it gets unpopular, than change it" vibe of most western productions.

As for Inu Yasha... blame takahashi, the creator of the manga for that one. She started inu yasha just after the Year of the Dog on the Chinese calender, and vowed to keep inu yasha going until the next year of the dog. The company that was doing the anime sat down with her to talk about ending the anime, and she was still nowhere near the end of the manga, so they just ended the series in mid story.
the interesting complicated storylines and how things can go from serious to stupid at anytime always makes me laugh.
