Try going out to bars, shops etc or join a group or sports team, youll be meeting lots of people. Good luck:)
I was in NYC this summer. I just left last week or else I'd say we should hang out. I didn't really try to meet new people since I was only living there for ten weeks for work. New York is a pretty easy place to meet people, though. Everyone is pretty talkative, so you can just go out and start up conversations, if that is your thing.
I'm a loner and fine with that.
