He never made as 1st Class, even though he convinced himself he did; in his head, Cloud kinda combined his life with Zack's. A lot of this is explained in obscure flashbacks.
It's like the episode of Red Dwarf where one character implants his memories into another character, who then remembers, among other things, having his appendix removed...twice.
Cloud became fused with Zacks memories... hmm maybe materia fusion can fuse people too. Time to investigate.Quote:

I never really thought too much about that scene. I ran under the assumption that Johnny really didn't know Cloud all that well and just presumed he could get away with lying to him because Cloud's stories were a little... well, I don't know, off. Aside from that, it's possibly an overlooked mistake left in the game.Quote:

yeah, square did everything to convince you he was in Soldier then let holes in the story line (SPOILER)when the gamer finds out he wasn't in Soldier and it was just made up
I thought this thread has agreed that Cloud was in SOLDIER, for a while, but wasn't successful enough to stay and advance. Low ranking SOLDIER members also wear the outfit of the standard Shinra footsoldier, as seen by the SOLDIER member studying in Junon during your first visit, and seen many times during Crisis Core.
So both Cloud and Johnny could have been in SOLDIER. But as to what happened between them... No clue. I doubt it is the destruction of Nibelheim, because Johnny wasn't there and had no reason to suspect Cloud of being there. Unless Johnny was the unnamed soldier who fell off the bridge during the Nibelheim mission and couldn't be found afterward. In which case Johnny's phenomenal luck shows up again with his surviving Sephiroth's rampage...
Cloud's outfit looks similar to generic Soldier First Class that you can fight as random encounters (Sister Ray if memory serves), minus the helmet of course. Interesting it's only the nameless flunkies who sensibly wear head protection. So Cloud decieved both himself and others of his rank as opposed to his membership in SOLDIER.
On a side note, I guess Sephiroth is too cool to wear a regulation uniform.
Yeah, Crisis Core explains that first-classers can wear whatever they want. Which, in Sephiroth's case, naturally means a long coat with no shirt and straps across his chest.
Which is why Cloud was quite upset at remembering that he didn't make it to SOLDIER 1st Class, and thus, his little cross-dressing incident was against the rules.Quote:

Maybe Johnny wasn't in SOLDIER. Maybe Tifa told him about her childhood friend, Cloud, who went off to join SOLDIER, or something.
