I've been a life long Trekkie and I remember growing up watching reruns of the original series (I wasn't around when the original series was new). This movie was fantastic. It was great to see the original crew back in action again even with different actors playing them.
For those of us familiar with the original series, there was lots of things in there for us to pick up on. For example: (SPOILER)Sulu and his fencing, and Captain Pike being the first Captain of the Enterprise with Spoke as his first officer.
This is also the only Star Trek movie that my youngest sister liked.
Totally bitchin' movie. First Star Trek anything I had ever seen. I've since watched the first 9 movies (still have Nemesis to watch) and have the complete Original Series waiting for me when I get done with that.
welcome to the trekki universe my friend
Funny thing is I never took Star Trek seriously because it always looked ridiculous and campy with low production values. My wife got me into it several years back and now I'm pretty hardcore and have watched back through all of the series and movies.
Coming from the perspective of someone who notices when the eff up details of stuff like this, I've gotta say the movie was incredible. I can see why it would be awesome to non-Trek fans, but for him to be able to capture that as well as appeal to the old fans... that's skill. I was amazed.
Some fans like to nit-pick about the casting, but I personally thought it was great over all. Things that were inherent to the original characters were brought out very strongly. Most of the actors looked the parts very well, 'cept Scotty a little and the fact that Chekov doesn't look anything like the original... like as far away from it as possible. However, I could overlook that because the guy who played him nailed Chekov as a character so well.
I also think the alternate timeline thing is a great and creative way to bring new story and make it plausible for a change in the canon. Anything that happened after (SPOILER)Nero showed up at the very beginning and polluted the timeline could be written off as a result of that.
If I were going to pick one thing that didn't quite hold true to the original it would be that Sarek just didn't seem ashamed enough of Spock. I mean... all through TOS and notably in the films... Sarek was all but disgusted with Spock and never so emotional or human about him. Not that he's very emotional in this movie, but more than he should be.
I also thought the (SPOILER)Uhura and Spock thing was a little odd. Sure it doesn't necessarily fly in the face of any canon, but it's a little odd. The moment in the turbolift right after (SPOILER)Spock's mother died could have been an immensely touching moment, but both my wife and I were far too distracted by the awkwardness of her (SPOILER)kissing him. Perhaps that moment would've been better if they'd set up their (SPOILER)relationship a little better. The only hint at it prior to that was when ships were being assigned and the issue of potential favoritism came up. Too subtle to suddenly have (SPOILER)her making out with him, and mildly inappropriate how passionate it seemed considering his friggin' mom just died.
I liked it a lot, my only problem was that some of the subplots seemed a little undercooked. The aforementioned Spock/Uhura relationship sticking out most in my mind, it really came out of left field for me. There were others that I can't seem to remember cause I saw it a week ago.
But otherwise a very entertaining film.
awesome movie. I don't really like the new Spock actor, but that may just be because Leonard Nimoy is/was so awesome as Spock. The new Bones McCoy is spot on, and Simon Pegg is sublime as Scotty.
I've only watched a few episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation with Patrick Stewart, and that was many years ago now, so I don't really remember much. However, I've always been interested in getting more into Star Trek, mostly because it's had such a big impact on pop culture, and now this badass movie has been released - AND it's been directed by JJ Ambrams, so I'm excited about watching it at some point!
I thought the opening was amazing, going straight into battle and having you leaning half way off your seat with the drama! The music, acting and special effects were all amazing. I've already seen it twice now and want to see it again. I'll give it a 9.8/10 to leave improvement somewhere... I haven't found it yet.
So far, I've 'justified' four trips to the movies for this one :D
Also, aside from the obvious photoshopping, that last pic of Patrick Stewart is real. It's a few years old now, but that's his actual buffness there.
In all seriousness, I really enjoyed Star Trek. I actually appreciate that they kept parts of it somewhat campy and the movie didn't take itself super seriously. Probably one of the more "fun" movies I've seen in a while. Still not enough Picard, though. So, for your enjoyment, more Picard:
