Haven't you guys ever done skateboarding or bmx riding? Sticks and stones may break my bones but glory is eternal and chicks dig scars. It's an old adage about skaters and bmx riders we tend to develop our scars over the years, it's also true most girls might not admit it but they dig scars makes guys look tougher.

Dueling and scarring were commonplace in history. Sometimes people would duel mainly to get the scars and have them badly treated so they'd be more conspicuous. So apparently some people found them attractive.
As for the brooding part, some women like brooding men. Maybe more in fiction than in real life, but it still happens.
