The Stroper is actually a recurring enemy in the Final Fantasy series. It has looked fairly different in every incarnation, so it is hard to tell what a Stroper actually is...
I don't recall seeing it in any other Final Fantasy. What other instalments does it appear in?
The Stroper is particularly awful during a level-one challenge. "Sweep" wipes out the whole party, so, half the time, just encountering the Stroper is a game-over.

There's also an enemy in FF11 named just "Stroper", which is a malboro-type enemy.
I bet they're the males and malboros are the females
